Risk Management at Goldman Sachs
Goldman Sachs serves our clients across multiple business areas (1st line businesses) and geographies.

In the normal course of activities, the firm incurs risk by committing capital to service clients.

However, we endeavor not to undertake risk in form or amount that may materially impair (a) the firm’s capital and liquidity position; (b) the firm’s ability to generate revenues even in a stressed environment; or (c) damage the firm’s reputation.

In evaluating our risk appetite, Goldman Sachs recognizes that our ability to safely take risk must be evaluated in the context of our overall control environment.

Risk management is a 2nd line control function that oversees the activities of the 1st line businesses.

The job of the Risk Management organization is to identify the risks incurred through business activity (Risk Identification), establish the risk appetite for these risks and ensure compliance with the risk appetite (through measuring, monitoring and limiting/controlling the risk at the firm).

Risks are classified into the major risk types of Credit, Market, Liquidity, Operational, and Model.

Credit Risk
Credit Risk (“CR”) is a central part of Goldman Sachs’ risk management framework, with primary responsibility for assessing, monitoring and managing credit risk at the Firm.

CR is staffed globally with offices including New York, London, Salt Lake City, Hong Kong, Dallas, Warsaw and Tokyo.

Understanding the credit quality of counterparties such as corporations, financial institutions, funds and governments worldwide is an essential aspect of the firm’s ability to be an effective financial intermediary.

CR professionals with expertise in financial, credit and risk analysis work closely with many areas of the firm, offering a unique opportunity to gain a broad perspective on the activities of the Firm.
