Risk Management at Goldman Sachs
Goldman Sachs serves our clients across multiple business areas (1st line businesses) and geographies.

In the normal course of activities, the firm incurs risk by committing capital to service clients.

However, we endeavor not to undertake risk in form or amount that may materially impair (a) the firm’s capital and liquidity position; (b) the firm’s ability to generate revenues even in a stressed environment; or (c) damage the firm’s reputation.

In evaluating our risk appetite, Goldman Sachs recognizes that our ability to safely take risk must be evaluated in the context of our overall control environment.

Risk management is a 2nd line control function that oversees the activities of the 1st line businesses.

The job of the Risk Management organization is to identify the risks incurred through business activity (Risk Identification), establish the risk appetite for these risks and ensures compliance with the risk appetite (through measuring, monitoring and limiting/controlling the risk at the firm).

Risks are classified into the major risk types of Credit, Market, Liquidity, Operational, and Model.

Risk Engineering Introduction
Risk Engineering is a multidisciplinary group of quantitative experts who are the authoritative producers of independent risk & capital metrics for the firm.

Risk Engineering, as a whole, is responsible for designing, implementing, executing, reviewing, interpreting, explaining and communicating risk & capital metrics used to independently ensure the firm adheres to its Risk Appetite and maintains the appropriate amount of Risk Capital.

Risk Engineering accounts for approximately 600 of the 1300 employees in the Risk Division, and is responsible for providing the Chief Risk Officer, senior management, regulators, and other stakeholders with high quality risk deliverables required to keep the firms activities within its defined risk appetite and comply with regulatory requirements.
