Duties and Responsibilities
The Data Scientist will be responsible for the duties listed below:
- Conducting analyses in a programming or statistical software suite such as: R, Python, SAS, SPSS, STATA, Tableau, PowerBI to explore/group data, test hypotheses, predict outcomes, and inform decisions;
- Deriving meaning from big data (i.e. datasets that may be large, disparate, unstructured, and/or complex);
- Demonstrating mastery in at least one scripting language (R, Python, SQL) and the ability to rapidly learn new frameworks and methodologies;
- Developing dashboards (e.g., in Power BI and Tableau) and other visual data discovery tools;
- Documenting and effectively communicating with technical and non-technical stakeholders and customers to gain business process requirements and to identify the appropriate data, methodological approach, and design;
- Distilling complex quantitative results and methodologies into plain language for non-technical audiences (e.g., court leaders, judges, policy makers, and the public);
- Employing interactivity and narrative storytelling for resulting products; and
- Upholding the mission of NCSC and work towards support of strategic priorities and organizational agendas.
Minimum Qualifications
To be considered for this position, candidates must demonstrate the following qualifications:
- A Master’s Degree or Certification in Data Science, Analytics, Management Information Systems, Statistics, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or related social science field;
- At least three years’ experience outside of a classroom environment with any of these: predictive modeling, AI, machine learning, forecasting, optimization, text analytics/NLP, computer vision, and simulation modeling;
- Ability to create dashboards using business intelligence platforms (e.g., Power BI, Tableau);
- Experience with modern open-source software used in advanced analytics, software development for data science applications, and data visualization, such as: Python (Matplotlib), R (ggplot2), Java; and
- Intermediate to advance expertise in Excel and relational databases (e.g., SQL, Power Pivot, Power Query); and
- Ability to travel periodically.
Preferred Qualifications are as follows:
- Knowledge of and experience with forecasting methods;
- Experience with algorithmic decision-making systems or predictive analytics;
- Knowledge of concepts such as AI/ML auditing, algorithmic impact assessments, transparency, recourse, robustness, human-ai interaction, and/or other topics in the AI ethics domain;
- Experience with SQL;
- Experience working with court case management system (e.g., Odyssey);
- GIS Certification;
- Curiosity about emerging research areas;
- Ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a team environment.
